Baker Street

We were shocked to discover on the day we returned to work in January 2018, that the building which had been acquired for our new head offices on Baker Street had been taken over by an activist group called Activists for Love, Hull, who had moved into the property with some of the homeless people from the city`s streets.

Although MRC don’t believe that the answer to this type of situation is to occupy commercial buildings such as Baker Street, which are totally unsuitable for residential accommodation, we do acknowledge that there is a need for accommodation with specialist support for people with complex issues.

MRC therefore pledged to obtain accommodation for all of the 10 homeless in the squat at Baker Street aiming to ensure that not only where their housing needs met but any other support required by them was also in place to give them the maximum chance of a successful progression, we aimed to have them all offers of accommodation within 4 weeks, and the Activists agreed to return the building to us following this.

MRC`s aim was to find those committed to moving forward with their lives access to treatment programmes and to ensure the support packages to help them achieve their goals of living drug and alcohol free lives were in place. We all recognised this could never be achieved living on the cold, hard streets of Hull but could only happen within the stable and safe environment of their own homes. Being letting agents we were able to provide the necessary accommodation or houses, what we needed was someone who could supply the support packages.

MRC are pleased to announce they did successfully obtain housing offers for the 10 people in the squat, and ensured the necessary support packages were in place. Michelle Clark, Operations Director for MRC, will continue working with, and monitoring the journey of, the people MRC have housed, alongside the charities and organisations which are providing them with support.

MRC is scheduled to meet with Nikki Osbourne, Unison and Emma Hardy, MP to discuss strategies for dealing with the homeless situation in Hull.

Michelle made the following comment ‘this has been an enlightening, life changing experience for me in so many ways. In the 10 years I have been with MRC, and in my role as Operations Director, I have worked with many charities who house vulnerable people, but have never had any direct contact with those who were being homed, that is until the Baker Street Squat.. Looking to the future, I aim to continue to work to address the issues surrounding homelessness, and on behalf of myself and MRC would like to thank everyone who helped and participated in making the above happen and I would also like to wish all who now have a roof over their heads the very best of luck'.

Ride for a cause

MRC have also agreed to sponsor Ride for a Cause over the course of the next 12 months. Ride for a Cause is a non-profit equine events organisation, which organises long distance rides for a fee per rider, in order to raise funds for UK Charities and projects including Alzheimers, MacMillan, Candlelighters, British Red cross, Multiple Sclerosis Society, World Horse Welfare.

In the Community

Supporting the local community is important to us as a business and over the years we have been involved with and helped many local schools, teams and organisations with sponsorships and various projects.

In 2016 we supported Thoresby Primary School by providing them with 100 high visibility vests for the children to wear when on school trips and, in 2017 we also sponsored Hessle Rangers Girls under 10’s teams, enabling them to purchase kits for all the girls.

2017 was a huge year for Hull being the UK’s City of Culture and we were delighted to support this by running a competition alongside Wyke College, for one of their Art and Design students to design a window display, commemorating Hulls City of Culture, that would be displayed in our office window throughout 2017.

MRC are also proud to have an annual promotion with local schools and nurseries to design a unique For Sale and To Let board, over the Christmas period. In 2016 we worked alongside WWN and the children each designed a glow in the dark bauble, which we then attached to our Christmas Tree board and erected on all of our For Sale and To Let boards across Hull.

Hi Vis vests

MRC provided Thorsby Primary School with 70 hi vis vests for their pre-school children to wear on school trips and when out and about.

Christmas board design

In December 2016 we got together with Wishing Well Nursery of Endike Lane, Hull to design Christmas baubles to go on a pre design Sales and Lettings board at all our properties in Hull. Each child’s bauble was made to glow in the dark and the children were all given a board as a keep sake.

Hull City of Culture window design

The Art and Design students at Wyke College also ran a competition to design a ‘Hull City of Culture’ window graphic with the winner having it made and displayed in our office window. The design has been in our window for 6 months now and has been covered by the Hull Daily Mail and the Hull 2017 bid team.
